1997 ATHLETES OF THE YEAR
Julie Varnadoe is a student at Deerfield-Windsor High School. Julie participated in all region softball in 1995 and 1996. She participated in all region baseball in 1996 and in
both all state and all region in 1996 and 1997. In tennis, Julie participated in all region and all state in 1996 and 1997, and in all region in 1997. Julie also enjoys track a
great deal.
   
Tom Ledford is a student at Westover High School. Tom has participated in cross country running for five years. He was a member of a four-time region championship team and a oneyear region runner-up team. In addition to being a four-year letterman
in both cross country and track, he is also a member of the swimming team, qualifying for state in swimming in 1997.
   
Shana Bush is a student at Byne Memorial Baptist School. Shana was honored with the title of most valuable player in both region and state basketball. She participated in three state basketball championships and in one state softball championship. Shana was also the starting pitcher in softball.
   
Anthony Branch is a student at Monroe Comprehensive High School. Anthony's talents lie in the fields of football, soccer and track. In addition to the honor of being chosen most valuable soccer player, he is also an all region performer in soccer. Anthony is a possible state performer in track, and holds exceptional stats in football, including 15 touchdowns and three interceptions during the 1996 season.
   
Shawn Merritt is a student at Sherwood Christian Academy. Besides serving as co-captain of Sherwood's varsity football team, Shawn has also lettered in basketball, tennis, golf and track. He placed on the all region and all state GISA 1997 football team and was chosen for the 1997 all region GISA basketball team.
   
Albert Sidney James is a student at Albany High School. Albert is a two-year football and a three-year baseball letterman. In addition to being a first team all region tight end in 1996, Albert also received the 12th grade Coaches Awa.rd for football. Albert is a Golden Herald finalist in the category of football as well.
   
Jamie Roberts is a student at Dougherty High School. Jamie was on the first team for all region and all state in football. He was also a second team Dynamite Dozen player, as well as a 1-AAA Offensive Player of the Year. In basketball, Jamie was named a
member of the Albany Herald Super-Six, was on the first team all Ěregion and all state, is 1-AAA Player of the Year, was a part of the "Terrific Ten in the State", and was selected to play in the Georgia/Tennessee all-star game.
