2000 ATHLETES OF THE YEAR

Daryl Smith
Dougherty High
School
Daryl Smith is a graduating senior at Dougherty Comprehensive High School. As a freshman, Qaryl was a 1-AAA semi-finalist. As a sophomore, he was on the 2nd Team All-Region LB and was an AII-Sowega Quarterfinalist for Region 1-AAA. Daryl's junior year at Dougherty High entailed a place on the 1st Team All-Region as LB, on the 2nd Team AII-Sowega, and as a member of the Regional 1-AAA State Champions. Daryl's senior year was exciting, also. He was a member of the Dynamite Dozen Team,  the 1st Team AII-Sowega, arid the  All-State Team. Daryl will play in  the Georgia-Florida All-Star Game on June 17 and has signed with  Georgia Tech.


Sheila Monds
Albany High School
Sheila Monds, Albany High School, is a four-year letterman in basketball, a four-year letterman in track, and a one-year letterman in cross country. A member of the state championship 400-meter relay team in 1999, Sheila also qualified for the state track meet during all four years of high school, as well as in five events this past year alone. In 1999, Sheila was the best offensive player in basketball and received the academic award. This year, she was most valuable player and winner of the academic award. Sheila is involved inthe FBLA Club, and was named Student of the Month (March 2000), Senior Superlative, Most Athletic Girl, and Golden Herald Award nominee.


Tommy Sharpe
Westover High School
Tommy Sharpe is a graduating senior from Westover High School. Tommy was a four-year letterman  in football and swimming and a three-year letterman in track. He received honors on the Albany Herald's 1998 All-Region 1-AAA football team, the Albany Herald's 1998 AII-Sowega football team, the Albany Herald's 1999 All-Region 1 AAA football team, and the Albany Herald's 1999 AII-Sowega football team. In the area of swimming, Tommy earned numerous awards, including most valuable swimmer in 1999 for Westover High School. In addition to outstanding accomplishments in athletics, Tommy is also quite involved in academic leadership.


Chris Daniels
Monroe High School
Chris Daniels has lettered for four years at Monroe High School in cross country and basketball. Chris lettered for two years in baseball as well. Honors achieved by this academically gifted student include 1-AAA region player of the year (1999, 2000), first team all state player (1999, 2000), AAA state player of the year (2000) and "Mr. Georgia Basketball" (2000). Chris was selected to play in the Southern Hoops Challenge this June 8-10. He was also selected to play in the North/South All-Star Game July 19. Chris is a team leader and  exemplary student.



Anne Wetherbee
Deerfield-Windsor
School
Anne Wetherbee is a graduating senior at Deerfield-Windsor School. She has lettered and received numerous recognitions in the ar.eas of softball, basketball, soccer, and track. Anne was selected as State of Georgia High School Heisman Award Winner in 1999. She has also maintained at 4.0 grade point average for four years, is a Furman University Scholar, and a four-year Beta Club Member. Anne will be attending Auburn University in the fall, planning to major in math education. She wants to become a coach in the future.nost valuable player three times and


Davy Cheek
Byne Christian School
 
Davy Cheek is a senior at Byne C;hristian School, where he has been a valuable member of the track team, the basketball team, the golf team, and the baseball team. Along with lettering over and over, Davy has also been named most valuable player three times and  has a long list of honors and awards in the sports in which he is involved. With all of the athletic success Davy has  enjoyed, he was also nominated for a Golden Herald Award and has received a scholarship to play baseball at Darton  College this fall.


Michael Kierce
Sherwood Christian
Academy 
Michael Kierce is a graduating senior at Sherwood Christian Academy. In the area of basketball, Michael was GISA Region 3AAA, All-Region Honorable Mention (1998, 1999), and Team Defensive player in Player of the Year (1999). In the area baseball, Michael was in the 1997 Strong Arm Club with five wins. In 1999, he was in the Strong Arm Club with five wins as well. Michael was in the 1999 Hit Man Club and the 1999 Run Maker Club, with 46 runs. He was best defensive player in 1998 and 1999, all-region 1998 and and all-state 1998, 1999.
