2002 ATHLETES OF THE YEAR

Devron Jefferson
Albany High
Devron Jefferson is a gifted athlete with a big smile and future plans of becoming an athletic trainer. He's been selected as one of Who's Who Among American High School Students. He has lettered four years in football, three years in basketball and two years in baseball. Devron is a four time Player of the Game in basketball. He's won Best Defensive Player Award at Albany High and achieved Best Defensive Player in basketball. He is one of the Albany Herald Dynamite Dozen, an Albany Herald Golden Award Achiever, and an Albany Herald Player of the Week. Devron is All-Region 1st team, All-Metro 1st . team and 3rd leading rusher in the Region. His most outstanding accomplishment so far is signing a scholarship to Georgia Southern University. Devron has attended sports camps and hopes after college to make it in professional sports. Three people in Devron's life he can't give enough thanks to is his Mom, Thelma Lynn, Coach Scott Horton and Anita Tunstall, as well as everyone else who has supported him.


Bobby Cook
Byne Memorial
Bobby Cook is thankful to be a good student with a 3.4 grade point average and an outstanding athlete at the same time. His parents Bobby and Sherry Jackson have been an important part of his success with school and in athletics, he says. He's been selected as one of Who's Who Among American High School Students three years in a row. Bobby has lettered three years in basketball and one year in baseball. He's been honored by the Rotary Club, has received All-Region Player twice, and has been Chairman of the Board two years for the most rebounds. After high school, Bobby will attend Darton College on the Hope Scholarship and has also received a scholarship from Heritage Bank. Bobby states he owes a lot to God for his  achievements, and he also wants to thank all  his coaches


Narada Kelson
Deerfield-Windsor
Narada Kelson A senior at Deerfield-Windsor Upper Campus,Narada has his life almost mapped out. He wants to pursue a higher education, in what, he's not sure. He loves sports but knows he wants to succeed educationally as well. As a diverse athlete Narada is All-Region in football and basketball. He is a member of the track and baseball teams and has lettered in both all four years. Narada is All-State in football, holds the single game rushing record for the school with 337 yards, holds the longest run from scrimmage record with 99 yards and holds the single season rushing record with 1928 yards. When Narada speaks of his positive influences there are two people that are on top. He gives thanks to his parents, Craig and Merietta Kelson. Narada has just signed a football scholarship with Charleston Southern College, where he will attend after his high school graduation.


Alexander Johnson
Dougherty High
Alexander Johnson is a senior at Dougherty High School and has received many awards during his four year high school career in athletics. The many awards he has include: All-American 1st Team at the Georgia Elite Magazine Hoop Scoop; Most Valuable Player at the Good Life City Basketball Holiday Classic; All Tournament Team - Fox31/Albany Herald Holiday Classic 2000; Co-M.V.P. Fox31/Aibany Herald; All-State Second Team at the Atlanta Tip Off Club 2000; All-Region 1st Team 1999-2000; And, All-SOW EGA 1st Team 1999-2000. Alexander was All-State Class AAA Second Team in 2000 and All-Class AAAA Player of the Year for 2000-2001. He was selected to play in North/South All Star Game; The Georgia/Florida All Star Game; The Georgia/Tennessee All Star Game; The Derby Festival Basketball Classic in Louisville, Kentucky; the Jordan Brand Capital Basketball Classic in Washington D.C. Alexander has been All-Region Team in 1999, 2000 and 2001. Although he has been recruited by over 100 major colleges, he has signed to play with the University of Georgia.


Vontrisa DaVida Coleman
Monroe High
Vontrisa DaVida Coleman With a grade point average of 3.67, this senior at Monroe Comprehensive is an outstanding athlete and has a goal of obtaining a scholarship in cheerleading at a major university. Vontrisa has been a Regional Gymnastics Champion two consecutive years, an All-American Cheerleader three times and had the privilege of being a half-time participant at the Gator Bowl in Jacksonville, FL this past football season. She has All-Around Placing in Gymnastics and received the YMCA Gymnastics Gem Award in 2002. Her senior year she received All-American Cheerleader, she was captain of the cheerleading squad, was swim team captain, and placed third in a regional meet for the 50 yard freestyle swim. She has lettered in her sports and has received many outstanding awards from various organizations, like becoming the YMCA Most Outstanding Gymnast for 2000-2001.


Kevin Shepard
Sherwood Christian
Kevin Shepard is a senior at Sherwood Christian Academy where he has earned six varsity letters in four different sports the last two years. Kevin was selected as an All-Region football player the last two seasons. This year he started as quarterback, free safety and was a co-captain. He has also been a starter on the varsity basketball team. In 2001, Kevin earned All-Region Honorable Mention and this year was named to All-Region basketball and in the last two seasons, he's helped lead his team to back-to-back region title games. He is a diverse athlete and shows it by being a low-medalist for the golf team. Last year he was a starter on the varsity baseball team which advanced to the state semi-finals. He has separated himself through demonstrations of leadership and by showcasing his talents in different sports.


Kurt Quarterman
Westover High
Kurt Quarterman is a senior at Westover and his goals include going Pro. He's been playing sports since he was six and his focus is to continue. Kurt plays football and runs track. In football he has been a three year letterman. He was selected as a member of the Albany Herald Dynamite Dozen in 2001; selected as a member of the Albany Herald ALL-SOWEGA football team in 2001; and received Honorable Mention selection for All-Region 1-AAA football team in 2001. In track, Kurt has also lettered three years. He was AAA State Champion in Shot Put and Discus in 2000 and 2001; Region 1-AAA Champion in the Shot Put and Discus in 2000 and 2001; He holds the record in Shot Put (60' 81/2") and holds the record in the Discus (185' 5"). Kurt's most outstanding achievement is receiving a scholarship to Louisville University. He thanks his family and coaches for all their support.
